Riddle 020: Calling All Crooks

A. [At Mayfield High, Edward is taking to his new job as Ethics teacher with very little enthusiasm. Any kids in his class? Your first assignment is being written on the board in a neat, tidy scrawl:

"How far would you be willing to go to escape this place?"]

Discuss.

B. [Later on that afternoon, Edward makes a public phone call, filtered away from drones, Grady, the Mayor, the Smiths, and the like.]

Mayfield, Mayfield, Mayfield. You know what I like to do every Sunday night when I'm not scheming a daring escape? I like to think up riddles. Like this one, for example: "What is the one question you can ask at any point in the day, and still get a different answer?" Give up? Hmm?

Answer: "What time is it?" See? Simple. I could say "7:26" just as easily as I can say the time is 9 o'clock PM. Or this one---actually, my old college roommate, Andrew, was instrumental in helping me think this one up.

"Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father is my father's son!" I'll let you figure out the answer to that one on your own.

Hmm. Perhaps this Sunday night, I'll think up another good riddle. Or perhaps I'll finally find a way for all of you to get out of here. Who knows? Maybe I already have. Interested? Well---you already know where to find me. I've practically given you all the answers, regardless.

[He chuckles obnoxiously.]

[Crowe is glad to have Edward back as a teacher. He would rather is be for Lit again, since Susan can be a bit... intense.

He looks at the question, thinking.]

What do you mean, "how"? I suppose using available resources, and coming up with the best plan... information is always the key.

Sorry, I made a mistake with the question D: edited it

Fair point, Mr. Crowe. But It's not just about the tools you use. It's the way that you use them. How far are you willing to go to get what you want? What are you willing to compromise? Or what won't you compromise?

no worries~

...almost whatever I can, I guess. I... I don't mind putting myself in harm's way to get some leads, but I'd prefer if other people didn't have to get hurt to do so. Especially people not involved at all. I wouldn't want to see people suffer because of something I did.

I guess it's a hard question to answer without being faced with it directly.

That's ethics for you. In Mayfield or out of Mayfield, you will always be posed with difficult questions throughout your life. Different opportunities to get ahead or to fall behind. And, unlike this class, you won't be given additional time to contemplate your answers.

Oh, I know. I just... in this case, I wouldn't want to have anyone else suffer if I could help it. Let Mayfield do what it wants to me. I'm willing to do what we did at City Hall again and again if it meant just getting one step further.

[He regards Crowe's answer thoughtfully.[

Very astute. And altruistic, too.

[He manages a tiny smile. After being told he was being selfish for his ideas and actions by another of his teachers, it was nice to hear that.]

Thanks, sir. I just hope there are others in town willing to do the same.
